Another little restoration to be revealed on Elizabeth Street soon

Heartfelt thanks to @rmituniversity for their investment in what is one of the most significant cinema spaces ‘ever built or ever likely to be built’ (Robin Boyd 1963). Built in 1924, the #CapitolTheatreMelbourne was designed by #WalterBurleyGriffin and partner #MarionMahoneyGriffin as a magical crystalline cave, animated by coloured lights. The restoration by @sixdegreesarchitects and @michaeltaylorarchitects has repaired all the plaster ceilings and installed a spectacular LED lighting system, setting up the theatre for the next 60 years !

5 years after live music was kicked out by Jinshan Investment in partnership with @whotels , with support from @lovellchen for its full demolition, and 3 years after the developers tore out the 1920's interior days before heritage listing, the Palace Theatre remains a bombsite on Bourke Hill. Shame to all involved. #savelivemusic #theatre #heritage #savethepalace #bourkestreet

A not very happy #heritagecompromise; they were going to keep only the facades of the 1925 #ElmsFamilyHotel, but after we complained, they kept or reconstructed the other external walls and a short bit of the corner #cornerbar wall too complete with blue tiles, but then squeezed a tower in that leans out over much of the site. The hotel facades seem to hold their own though, mostly. @johnwardlearchitects for @isptproperty
