A case of #facadism+a bit more, almost but not quite acceptable (thanks samantha stoney for the photo) - this 1938 factory on A’Beckett Street is a particularly notable example of European Modermism, designed by #EFBillson, a pupil of #WalterBurleyGriffin, but that didn’t stop the original 2015 proposal that would have seen only the front wall retained, with the windows just empty gaps with open space behind ! The City of Melbourne’s heritage advisor described it as ‘eating its heritage host’, and after that fuss, the design was changed - the improved version from 2017 keeps about 6m depth of the structure (plus more along the driveway entry) and about 10m of side wall, and the tower above no longer leans out over it, but the very nice entry stair on the left side is not (as far as we know!) being kept. It’s student housing, the developer is Singapore based #WeeHur, and the architects are @hayball_arch. Ps the concrete sunshades have been cut off, presumably to be reconstructed.
A win ! So far. Very pleased that @cityofmelbourne last night voted in favour of a motion to correct a mistake made in the recent listing of the #HardwareLane heritage precinct (itself should have been done ages ago) concerning this one building, the early #Modernist 1941 warehouse/ office block known as Chart House, which was graded as ‘not significant’ because it had been altered - but actually it hadn’t, we had to go to the archives to get the plans to prove it ! The listing then got messy- because of a mix up, these facts were missed until it had gone through the whole process, so now it’s getting its own mini process. Hopefully the Panel will agree it should be Contributory, and then we can say the proposed hotel tower isn’t a good idea. It was designed by #RMandMHKing , who did a few other almost Modernist projects in 1940-41. It was built for John Donne Charts & Maps, abs the shopfronts, and their sign !, are intact too.
The #HotelWindsor tower is off ! 11 years after first proposed, #RichardWynne #MinisterForPlanning has refused to extend the permit. It was already extended by VCAT twice, and the last time they said it should be the last. So now maybe they’ll give up and sell ? Or just do the boutique redevelopment they should have done in the first place ?
We've been keeping an eye on this little warehouse in Drewery Place ever since one of Melbourne's most hidden #lanewaybars shut down last year, and it seems empty since. Such a shame that a character filled heritage building is sitting vacant, anyone out there know what's going on with it?
