Objection | Facading of 1872 Fletcher Jones Building | Add your voice

The old Fletcher Jones Building on Flinders Street (originally built in 1872), is proposed to be façaded, and have a twenty-five-storey glass-clad apartment tower sticking out the top. The setback from the retained façades will only be three to five metres. Instead of recreating exactly the Queen Street facade that was altered in the 1970s, they are proposing an ‘interpretive’ version made from honed bluestone.

Melbourne Heritage Action believes that the façading of this building is completely unacceptable.

  1. The Fletcher Jones Building proposal creates a troubling precedent for Flinders Street – do we want to see a ‘curtain’ of glass towers fronted by 19th century facades lining most of that road?
