Building to watch | 1931 Equity Trustees

equity trusteesThe wonderful 1931 Equity Trustees at 472 Bourke St is up for sale and described as having ‘tremendous potential!’ There is no mention of a previous permit that was granted a few years ago and allowed six floors on the roof and ten floors behind, so perhaps it has lapsed. We are concerned a new owner might want to go for more. We will be watching this site and keep you updated.

History

The 1931 Equity Trustees building was by the firm Oakley & Parkes (who designed much of early Canberra) in a Neo-Romanesque style. It features a very attractive facade of tapestry brickwork above a plinth of Sydney sandstone. Many fine interiors also remain intact. The rich history of the building was described by Greg Barns when the building came under threat in 2010, read more here.
